How to Write Social Media Policies for Facebook - Part 1

If you need to write Social Media policies for Facebook, then this article will show you what you need to document in your guidelines, how to get started, and what mistakes to avoid.

The following guidelines are designed to get you started when writing your Social Media policy documents. You'll need to adjust these depending on how your company uses Facebook.

1. Align with other Departments dont develop your Social Media policies in isolation. Work with your Marketing and HR department so they are aware of your new policies and guidelines. Again, its easier to do this once everyone is on the same page.

2. Create an Official Social Media Policy Document Gather all your social media policies into a single Social Media Policy Guide. By publishing a formal document, you're saying to the staff that this is real and is now part of their job description.

3. Cross-reference other Policy Documents work with HR to ensure that your document is aligned with other official documents, such as Employee Handbooks and distribute these on your intranet.

4. Develop a Training Program work with the Training department and create a series of training workshops that introduce the core concepts of Social Media and how it is to be used in your company.

Tailor this for different business units and keep the material as practical as possible. Dont spend too much time on abstract ideas. Keep it simple and give handouts at the end of the session.

5. Facebook pages provide guidelines on how to setup a Facebook page. This should include information on the correct logo, slogan, contact details, official photos, product terminology, trademarks, and other official information that must be presented correctly.

6. Set Expectations explain to your staff what is expected of them when they go onto Social Media sites.

Show them examples of how other companies do this. The book Groundswell gives many examples that you can use for these business scenarios.

7. Share Case Studies everyone is curious about how others use Social Media these days, so if your team can see case studies of how Social Media will benefit their job, then its easier for you to implement these policies.

Facebook offers many business opportunities for your company. Make sure that you're employees are equipped with a detailed set of Social Media Policies so they clearly understand their role, how to respond to comments, and what they should not post on Social Media sites.

You also need to remind employees that what they post on personal pages, including personal Facebook pages, should not reflect badly on your company.
