Insider Tips for Margins and Page Orientation

Here are some tips and tricks for managing your word documents, especially printing and setting up pages.

How to change Page Orientation?

On the File menu,

Click Page Setup, and

Select page orientation on the Margins tab.

Where are the Mirror Margins options?

On the File menu, click Page Setup.

In the Multiple pages list (middle of screen) click the drop-down menu and select the Mirror margins option.

How can I print 2 pages per sheet?

On the File menu, click Print.

In the Pages per Sheet list (lower right corner), select the 2 pages per sheet option from the drop-down menu.

Why is text cut-off when I print my document?

If your page margins are too narrow, Microsoft Word displays the message "One or more margins are set outside the printable area of the page."

To ensure that your text is not cut off, click Fix to automatically increase the margin width.

You can use the Margins tab to set the margins manually (File > Page Setup > Margins). However, as the minimum margin settings depend on your printer, printer driver, and paper size, it s recommended that you check your printer manual to determine their settings.

How to have Portrait and Landscape orientation on the same page?

You cannot print in portrait and landscape orientation on the same page. However, you can achieve this effect by using the Microsoft Word drawing tools.

For example, if the document is in portrait orientation, you can create a vertical text box that contains the text you want in landscape orientation.

To change the orientation in a text box (e.g.. horizontal to vertical), click inside the text box, and then click the Change Text Direction button on the Text Box toolbar.

Different Top and Bottom margins

In File > Page Setup > Layout, select the Different Even and Odd checkbox for the headers and footers.

Next, insert additional lines (by pressing Enter) into the header and footer of the type of page that needs the larger margins.

To get the different margins, go to Page Setup > Layout and select the option for different Odd and Even Page headers.

From the View Headers and Footers menu item, access the Odd page header and format the space after the paragraph to force the margin to be the size you want.

Do the same with the space before the paragraph in the footer. If you want larger margins on the odd pages than on the even, this should be all you have to do if you've already setup the margins for the even pages.

How to Create a Page with No Margins?

In File > Page Setup > Margins, set all margins to 0 and click OK.

Word will display an error message about the margins. Select Fix and the result is the smallest margin that the printer driver will allow.

Tip: Most printers will not allow you to print to the edge of the page.
