Word corrupted my document!

Even if you do everything right, sooner or later one of your documents will become corrupt. Sometimes word will even open the file, but before you can do any work, it crashes!

How can you retrieve the document?

BTW: Before you do anything, make a copy of the corrupted file as a backup.

Fixing Damaged Word Files

To ‘re-open’ a damaged document, follow these steps:

• In Word, from the File menu, select Save As.

• Select Rich Text Format in the drop-down list box.

• Enter a new file name that was damaged.

• Click OK.

This saves the file in Rich Text (RTF) format and removes the corrupted information.

TIP: Open the RTF file and save it as a Word document, i.e. with a .doc extension.

Recover text from any file

Microsoft Word tries to automatically recover a damaged document if it detects a problem with the file. You can also "force" Word to try to recover a document when you open it.

1. On the File menu, click Open.

2. In the File of type list, click All Files *.*.

3. In the Open dialog box, select your document.

4. Point to the arrow on the Open button, and then click Open and Repair.
