Using the wrong tone in your emails

When writing emails, what you actually write and what you mean to say can come across as quite different.

“But what I meant was…” Too late! The damage has been done.

The impact of the words you use will have a different effect depending on how you phrase them, for example, short email headings can appear curt and too direct.

Using CAPs (capital letters) can seem like you are shouting. Exclamations add to this.

EMAIL ME!!!!

What does this say about the authors?

Or this?

URGENT – Email me when you return!

When writing for an international audience, the US style of writing ("write me") can often be considered blunt and impolite.

Here are different variations of a simple sentence.

  • Email me.
  • Please email me.
  • I waiting for YOUR email
  • Will you email me, now.
  • Could you send the email.
  • I look forward to your email.
  • It’s important for you to email me.
  • I’ll expect your email soon.
  • Be sure to email me so we can discuss this proposal.
